SACRAMENTO – For his work on behalf of people with disabilities, tomorrow Senator Leland Yee (D-San Francisco/San Mateo) will receive the Ed Roberts Disability Rights Pioneer Award from the State Independent Living Council.
“Senator Yee has shown an unwavering commitment to the disability community throughout his many years of service,” said Jessica Lorenz, Executive Director of the Independent Living Center in San Francisco. “He recognizes that a community that excludes even one of its members is not a community.”
“It is quite an honor to receive this recognition from the State Independent Living Council,” said Yee. “I am proud to receive this award named after California’s foremost pioneer for disability rights”
Roberts, born in Burlingame, California, began the disability rights movement 50 years ago. After attending College of San Mateo, he was the first UC Berkeley student with severe disabilities and to rely on a wheelchair when he arrived in 1962. Roberts is now considered the father of the Disability Rights Movement. In 2011, he was inducted into the California Hall of Fame.
Yee will be presented the award on Tuesday, February 7 at 8:30 AM, at the State Capitol, Eureka Room.
The State Independent Living Council is an 18-member council, appointed by the Governor, serving to maximize opportunities for people with disabilities who desire to live independently. The State Independent Living Council membership represents a cross-section of the independent living movement in California and, by law, the majority of the volunteer council members are people with disabilities.
