“Sa Sariling Bayan”

Ang pala-palagay sa kung ano at alin ang sariling bayan ay magkakaiba sa bawat tao.  Higit itong matingkad pagdating sa pagtingin at pananaw ng mga imigrante o mga taong lumikas at nangibang lupain para makipagsapalaran, manirahan at mamuhay.

Maaaring sa mga imigrante, ang lupang iniwanan ang itinuturing pa ring “sariling bayan” kahit sila ay naninirahan at namumuhay na sa malayo at ibang bansa— tulad ng pagtingin ng mga kababayan nating imigrante mula sa Pilipinas.  Marami ang nagsasabing “sariling bayan” pa rin ang Pilipinas kahit na greencard holders (legal permanent residents) o kaya’y United States citizens na sila.

Pero hindi natin maiaalis o maiiwasan na ang mga anak ng mga imigranteng nabanggit natin o ang susunod pa nilang henerasyon sa Amerika ay kikilala pa rin sa Pilipinas bilang “sariling bayan” kahit na ang kanilang grupong etniko ay Filipino o Filipino-American.  Bilang mga taong isinilang sa Amerika, tama lang kasi na sa tingin nila ay mga “tunay na Amerikano” na sila sa isip, sa salita, at sa gawa, hindi nga lamang sa kulay ng balat at pagmumukha.  Pero sa katunayan, hindi ba hindi na lamang puti o Caucasian ang tinataguriang Amerikano, dahil iba’t-ibang kulay, samut-saring hugis ng pangangatawan, maraming mga wika at kultura, maging sa relihiyon at lahing pinagmulan ang ibig sabihin ng katagang Amerikano?

Sa mga Pilipinong kumikilala pa rin sa Pilipinas bilang kanilang sariling bayan, lalo na iyong mga tinatawag sa census na “foreign born,” kahit papaano ay sumusubaybay pa rin ang mga ito sa mga nagaganap sa Pilipinas.  Malimit ang kanilang mga puso’t damdamin, ligaya’t pighati, lungkot at saya, galak at pag-aalala, pagkabalisa at bahala na, ay karugtong o kaakibat pa rin ng mga nagaganap sa Pilipinas.  Kapansin-pansin iyan sa pagbubunyi nila sa mga panalo ni Manny Pacquiao, sa tagumpay ng EDSA I, pagkapanalo ni Pangulong Noynoy Aquino, at pakikidalamhati sa libing ni Ninoy at Cory Aquino.  Nalulungkot, naaawa, nakikipag-damayan at nagpaparating karamihan sila ng tulong— tulad sa nagaganap na kasawiang-palad dulot ng malalakas na bagyo, baha, lindol, lahar, pagputok ng bulkan, masaker, iskandalo, at iba pa.

Sinubaybayan ng maraming imigranteng Pilipino ang naganap na trahedya sa Quirino Grandstand sa Maynila noong Lunes (Agosto 23, 2010), na nag-resulta sa pagkakapaslang sa walong turistang Tsino mula sa Hong Kong at pagkamatay ng hostage-taker na isang dating pulis Maynila.  Ang pagdanak ng dugo at di-mahusay na pag-resolba sa sitwasyon, na pinapalagay ng marami na pagkakamali ng mga pulis, miyembro ng media, taong usisero, ng taong may otoridad at gobyerno, ay nagsilbing malaking dagok sa buong Pilipinas, isang napakatinding mantsa sa puri at dangal ng bansa at ng mga Pilipino.  Inaasahan na maaapektuhan ang turismo at ang magandang pangalan ng bansa sa buong mundo.  Isang nakakalungkot na pangyayari, at pinapalagay ng iba na“kahiya-hiya talaga.”

Hindi maiaalis o maiiwasan na magbubuhos ng galit, at maglabas ng kanilang sama ng loob at mabigat na emosyon ang mga Pilipino, Tsino, at maging ang ibang tao sa mundo.  Mayroong pang nagtatanong ng “Ano na ba ang nangyayari sa sariling bayan natin?”

Sa Facebook at sa internet, kung saan libo-libong tao ang malayang nagpapahayag ng kanilang emosyon, kuro-kuro, pagtingin at analysis, poot at galit, at mga opinyon, mayroon ding nag-post ng mga videos sa Youtube na nagpupukaw ng damdaming makabayan at pagbabalik-loob sa sariling bayan.  Isa na rito ang kumalat na lumang kundiman na nilikha noong 1930 ni V. Tolentino na pinamagatang “Sa Sariling Bayan.”

“Ang bayan kong hirang / Pilipinas ang pangalan / Perlas ng silangan

Sa taglay na kariktan / Ngunit sawingpalad / Dahil sa mithing paglaya / Laging lumuluha / Sa pagdadalita / Kay tamis mabuhay / Sa sariling bayan / Simoy ng amihan / Himig ng kundiman /Sa hardin ng bulaklak / Ang bango ay matimyas / Ginto ang liwanag / Ligid ng paglingap.”

Nang una kong marinig ang kundimang ito, naalala ko ang isa pang makabayang kundiman— “Ang Bayan Ko“— na nilikha noong 1929 ni Constancio de Guzman mula sa tula ni Jose Corazon de Jesus.  Ang kundimang ito ay isang kantang pang-protesta noong panahong sinakop ng mga Amerikano ang Pilipinas, at naging malaganap noong panahon ng aktibismo noong 1970s, at kinikilalang “un-official national anthem” noong pagkapaslang kay Ninoy Aquino at sa panghihimagsik sa EDSA I (People’s Power Revolt) noong 1986.  Akala ko noong una  na sadyang panimula ng “Ang Bayan Ko” ang “Sa Sariling Bayan.”   Dalawang kundiman pala, at napapanahon talaga ngayong balik-balikan ang “Sa Sariling Bayan” at ang iba pang makabayang awitin at kundiman.
