600 towns have no fire trucks

MAKATI CITY – At least 600 municipalities nationwide have no fire trucks, according to Interior Secretary and National Police Commission Chairman Jesse Robredo.

Robredo made the disclosure shortly after the Tuguegarao, Cagayan fire that killed 16 persons.

According to Robredo, this was due to shortage of funds. He said that before the Tuguegarao fire, the Bureau of Fire Protection had asked  the Office of the President to allow the local government units to use their calamity funds for purchasing fire trucks and other fire-fighting equipment.

He said he is eyeing to procure new equipment for firefighting  and introduce a new system that will address the problem of lack of fire trucks.
