MAKATI CITY — The Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) is eyeing the use of various technologies to address traffic problems and improve rescue operation efforts during disasters.
MMDA Chairman Francis Tolentino said he has already started discussions with the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), particularly on the possibility of developing Filipino-designed solar-powered traffic signal system, speed radar guns and rescue sensors.
He said solar-powered traffic lights might be expensive but the agency could still save money from the electric bills.
Tolentino said the project, should it push through, could save for the MMDA at least P4.5 million a month for traffic signal light operations and maintenance.
According to Tolentino, at present, the MMDA spends at least P9 million a month to maintain and operate traffic signal lights.
With the use of solar-powered traffic lights, Tolentino said he expects to cut electricity cost by at least a half.
MMDA spokesperson Tina Velasco said the MMDA needs at least P3.5 billion just to overhaul Metro Manila’s present signal lights and convert them to the LED (Light emitting diode) type now being used in other countries.
