GUIMBA, Nueva Ecija — Carranglan town Mayor Restituto Abad and his driver-security, Private First Class Satty Duclayan, were hurt in an ambush here Saturday afternoon.
The gunman, identified as a certain Jonathan Carpio, allegedly a resident of Barangay Obrero, Cabanatuan City, was arrested by police.
Supt. Renato David, town police chief, said the identity of the gunman was established through the confession made by Jose Bernalin Pascual, a resident of Barangay Pagas, Cabanatuan City, who reportedly drove the get-away motorcycle.
David said Pascual was arrested by pursuing policemen in Barangay Cawayang Bugtong here when the suspect met an accident.
Pascual said he was not informed of Carpio on their job until they reached Guimba, a few minutes before the attack.
Pascual is a former drug convict, police said.
Investigation disclosed that Pascual positioned a few meters from the crime scene while the gunman posed as a traffic volunteer until the victims’ vehicle arrived.
Abad just emerged from an installation ceremonies of Freemasonry when the attack occurred.
Abad sustained two gunshot wounds on his shoulder and neck while Duclayan suffered three on his head and neck, police reported.
They are now undergoing treatment at a hospital in Cabanatuan City, David said.
Police have yet to establish the motive behind the failed assassination.
