LAS VEGAS — Unbeaten American boxing icon Floyd Mayweather Jr. has avoided Filipino world boxing great Manny Pacquiao again, and instead chose Puerto Rico’s Miguel Cotto as his opponent on May 5 in Las Vegas.
Cotto readily accepted Mayweather’s challenge, promising that he will defeat the American champion.
With the development, Pacquiao, who had an eye for Cotto in a May or June fight in Las Vegas, and his promoters are now working on another American boxer, Tim Bradley, for his next fight. Pacquiao had pummelled Cotto in previous fight.
Pacquiao earlier turned down an offer by Mayweather to fight in which the US fighter will get a bigger chunk of the prize money, including all the profit from pay-per-view subscriptions of the fight.
Mayweather called Pacquiao himself to make the offer but his “unrealistic” proposal was rejected by the Filipino world pound-for-pound king and owner of eight championship belts in as many boxing divisions.
Top Rank’s Bob Arum also had made known his reservations for a May or June fight of Pacquiao with Mayweather because of the lack of sufficient time to promote the dream fight and to prepare a bigger venue in Vegas so it can accommodate thousands more of boxing fans and thus earn more for both fighters.
Arum had toyed with the idea of $50 million minimum prize money for each of the fighters in case the megafight happens, making it the richest boxing bout in history.
The welterweight champion Mayweather will have to move higher at super weltergefight with the fight against Cotto, the current World Boxing Association super welterweight champion.
Mayweather was supposed to start serving his 90-day jail sentence for domestic violence in April but he had asked the Nevada court that he begin instead serving in jail on June 1 and this was granted. Mayweather is facing other charges before the Las Vegas court, some of them arising from his assault of his ex-wife and a guard and a case filed by Pacquiao himself.
Boxing fans have long sought a matchup between Mayweather and Pacquiao.
Mayweather, who has won titles in seven weight classes, won his only other fight at super welterweight in 2007 with a split decision over Oscar de la Hoya for the World Boxing Council title. In contrast, Pacquiao beat dela Hoya black and blue in their fight.
Cotto defended his crown last December by stopping Antonio Margarito in the 10th round. Pacquiao had also defeated the Mexico fighter.
“I am here to fight the biggest names in boxing,” Cotto said. “I’ve never ducked anyone or any challenge in front of me. I have accepted everything to give the fans what they like — great and exciting fights.
“Stay tuned because I will convincingly beat Floyd Mayweather.”
Mayweather had made a deal for a May 5 fight but Pacquiao had wanted a June date to maximize revenue for what figures to be the biggest-paying blockbuster in boxing history, if it happens, which now cannot happen until late this year.
